The Tendency to Power monitoring: Power monitoring total solution based on CAN bus power meter
 
The PM-213x-CAN series power meter provides the CAN bus interface for communication. It inherits all CAN bus features so that the data collection of the real-time power consumption information becomes more reliable and faster. In order to applying the PM-213x-CAN with the PC or PAC simply and conveniently, the master solutions of the PM-213x-CAN are released. Through downloading the power meter management firmware into the I-8120W or PISO-CM100U, the power meter masters are given. Utilizing these masters brings you the efficient solutions in power control and monitor system, especially in collecting the data from a lot of remote power meters.
 
 
The I-8120W is used with the PAC which may be XPAC, WinPAC or ViewPAC. The XPAC with the WES and Windows CE 6.0 platform gives you high performance PAC solutions. The WinPAC and ViewPAC are the economic PACs with the Windows CE 5.0 platform. The ViewPAC has some buttons and touch screen, which are especially suited for monitoring and controlling in the field. If you prefer to use the PC for applications, the PISO-CM100U can satisfy you. After finishing the installation of the I-8120W or PISO-CM100U, it manages all the PM-213x-CAN power meters and collects all power data automatically. Then, you can call the provided APIs of VC++, BCB or VS .NET to configure parameters or get the data from power meters. Besides, there is a free management utility. It helps you to set up the power manage system and to diagnose your application quickly. The screenshot is shown in the following figure.

The Master Firmware of the power meter Features:
  • Follow CiA CAN 2.0B specification.
  • Support both PM-2133-CAN and PM-2134-CAN series power meter.
  • Support programmable baud rate 125 kbps, 250 kbps and 500 kbps.
  • Managing up to 45 power meters with single I-8120W or PISO-CM100U.
  • Collecting power information of all power meters automatically.
  • The scan time of 45 power meters is only 368ms at baud 500Kbps.
  • Monitoring the communicating status of the power meters.
  • Provide VC6, BCB, and VS.Net APIs and demos.
  • The utility tool for configuring the parameters and diagnosing the applications.

The scan time comparison with the RS-485 and CAN power meter
  1. Increasing the amount of the power meters, the scan time of the RS-485 will grow faster more than the CAN bus.
  2. When expanding the network in the feature, CAN bus will be more flexible than RS-485 bus.
  3. In the harsh environment with electric noise, the CAN bus has better anti-noise ability than RS-485.
    In totally performance, the CAN bus is more efficient than RS-485.
