Alice's HMI
A case study of building automation

This document simply introduces how to use TouchPAD in the field of Building Automation. Here we introduce you a case of common meeting room.

Introduction:
A common meeting room must contain several equipments, such as lights, air conditioners, a projector and a projector screen. This case simply implements a ˇ§Alice HMIˇ¨ to integrate these equipments and create several scenarios to simplify operations.

Case Analysis
Alice works in an office and always uses a meeting room. Before a meeting, Alice needs to setup the meeting environments including lowering down the projector and its screen, turning on air conditioners and lights. Sometimes, during the meeting, Alice needs to turn on/off the fluorescent lights, or switch the downlights on/off for making a particular atmosphere. Besides, occasionally the customers complain about the temperature and Alice needs to tune the air conditioners. Going through the whole meeting process, frequently turning on/off equipments not only interrupts the meeting but also makes Alice exhausted. Not to say that everything should be restored back to its original positions after meeting.

Is there a method more efficient and more convenient?
Yes. Use TouchPAD to integrate all equipments and make all the controls through only TouchPAD. A programmable TouchPAD makes controls more intelligent. With its touch screen, TouchPAD becomes more user-friendly.

The following is the equipment list of Aliceˇ¦s meeting room:
Fluorescent light          x 2
Downlights                    x 3
Air conditioner              x 3
Projector                        x 1
Projector screen           x 1

Configurations

Note: we use XP-8747-CE6(Programmable Automation Controller) because of its strong computing power to avoid experiencing delays in turning on/off equipments. (In this case, not a great number of equipments in the meeting room is involved, the powerful XP-8747-CE6 should not have adopted. However, using XP-8747-CE6 in this case is not only for demonstration, but also for integrations with all other office area outside this meeting room for expansion if needed in the future.)

Project Planning
Pages on TPD-283-W Descriptions

This is the home page, itˇ¦s a menu.
There are four control options created for this case:

  1. Light control
  2. Air conditioner setting
  3. Projector control
  4. Scenarios
Light Control:
Draw a simple figure to represent the meeting room. Once the lights change their states, this page will be updated accordingly. There are two fluorescent lights and three downlights. All lights are controlled through XP-8747-CE6 by I-87061W and read back the latest states by I-87046W.
Air Conditioner Settings:
There are three sets of air conditioners. All controls are made through XP-8747-CE6 to read back current temperatures by I-87018ZW, to read back states of air conditioners by I-87046W, and to control the wind speed by I-87061W.
Projector Control:
There are one projector and one projector screen.
All controls are made through XP-8747-CE6 to read back the signal state of the projector by I-87046W and to control the lifting of the projector and the projector screen by I-87061W.

Scenarios:
Finally, design some scenarios as followings:

  1. Meeting mode
  2. Presentation mode
  3. Discussion mode
  4. Activity mode
  5. Class mode
  6. Movies mode

Project implementations
IPC DAS not only provides HMI hardware devices, TouchPAD/ViewPAD, but also offers the free developing tool, HMIWorks, for implementing the projects easily. HMIWorks supports C language and ladder diagram design. It realizes the requirements of fast programming, downloading and deployments. Using HMIWorks to implement this case is quick and reliable.

Conclusions
With TouchPAD, Alice will not be uneasy to have a meeting any more.
